'Sweet game'

The prosecutor, handling the case, detailed the criminal behavior to the court.

She stated his victims were under-privileged children who were staying at a summer program which he managed.

The man conducted a "sweet game" with the youngsters, the legal counsel explained, in which he would go into the children's bedrooms when they were settling down and request they to ingest treats "as quickly as they can".

She stated to the judge the defendant had played this game with the boys "over an extended period", and youngsters had previously become sick the next day.

She explained the defendant had been capable of justifying this over a long period as the minors being "overexcited from fun", until his stepchild had suspicions in summer 2025.

The prosecutor added: "This year his stepchild had concerns about what was going on, justifiably.

"They resolved" to investigate in the individual's items."

The legal counsel stated items including lubricant, ointment and medical needles were discovered, and his stepson alerted the law enforcement about his concerns.

She said the man continued to play the "candy game" with six boys that evening - that Saturday - and they were all sick the subsequent day.

"The police had not gone out by that time," she stated further.

The police watchdog, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, earlier informed that it was examining the police response of the events.

The prosecutor explained the children were unable to walk properly due to their condition, so the family member called the police once more.

She said Ruben then played the "candy game" in a room of five children.
