Weather Balloons Utilized to Smuggle Tobacco Products Closed Lithuanian Airport

Recovered contraband balloons
No fewer than 11 of the weather balloons, containing thousands of packs of black-market cigarettes, have been collected so far

Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for an extended period when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.

Flight Disruptions

The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.

Border Security Response

Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.

As many as 14 of the weather balloons sent during the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.

Smuggled Items Retrieved

A minimum of 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.

Cross-Border Contraband Trend

Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."

Since January, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.

Neighboring Country Impact

Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the balloons.

Smuggling Techniques

When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Security Service Goals

Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."

International Concerns

These airspace violations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.

Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
